ABOUT Healthy spinach & pulse appe RECIPE

A wholesome batter of dals and rice is fermented for 12 hours, the next day ingredients like spinach and onion are added, and cooked in an appe mould to make a tasty snack.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Bengal gram - 5 tablespoons
  2. Arhar dal - 2 teaspoons
  3. Split green gram - 1 teaspoon
  4. Rice - 1/4 cup
  5. Chopped spinach - 1/2 cup
  6. Finely chopped onions - 1/4 cup
  7. Finely chopped green chilies - 4-5 no
  8. Salt to taste
  9. curry leaves - 10
  10. Oil - 2 teaspoons
  11. A pinch of asafoetida

Instructions

  1. Combine daal and rice and soak for 12 hours .
  2. Drain the water and blend to a smooth paste and ferment for another 12 hours.
  3. Heat oil in a pan add onion, curry leaves, chilli, spinach, asafoetida and salt saute for 2 minutes.
  4. Add this tempering to the batter and mix well. Put the batter in a steamer.
  5. Cook till the lower surface becomes golden brown and then turn each Appe upside down using a fork so as to cook them from the other side using a little oil .
  6. Garnish with grated coconut and serve immediately.
