Vada curry is one the best side recipe for idli/dosa and is quite popular in Chennai.Here I have used steamed method instead of deep frying due to calorie constrain.

Ingredients Serving: 3

  1. To Grind:
  2. Channa dal - 1 cup(soaked)
  3. Red chilly-2
  4. Fennel seeds-1\2 tsp
  5. salt-1\2 tsp
  6. Other Ingredients:
  7. Oil -2 tbsp
  8. Cinnamon - small piece
  9. Cloves - 2
  10. Onion-1 big,chopped
  11. tomato-1
  12. Ginger garlic paste-1 tsp
  13. Red chilly powder-1 tsp
  14. coriander powder- 1n 1\2 tsp
  15. turmeric powder-1\2 tsp
  16. Salt to taste
  17. Mint and coriander leaves
  18. cardamon - 2
  19. Bay leaf-2

Instructions

  1. Soak dal in water for 2 hrs.Then drain and grind to a coarse paste with all other items to grind .Make small balls of it and steam them in the idli cooker/steamer.
  2. Heat oil in a pan, add in all whole pieces, then add chopped onion and fry till it becomes translucent then add ginger garlic paste cook till raw smell goes.
  3. Add in chopped tomato, cook till mushy, followed by all dry powder mix well. Add a cup of water, check for salt and spices and wait to boil. Meantime break the steamed vada into small pieces.
  4. When it starts to boil add the vada pieces. Check for salt and spices and wait to blend well. Add in mint/coriander leaves.
  5. Serve for idli or dosai.
