Ingredients to make Vada curry | Side dish for idli/dosa

  • To Grind:
  • Channa dal - 1 cup(soaked)
  • Red chilly-2
  • Fennel seeds-1\2 tsp
  • salt-1\2 tsp
  • Other Ingredients:
  • Oil -2 tbsp
  • Cinnamon - small piece
  • Cloves - 2
  • Onion-1 big,chopped
  • tomato-1
  • Ginger garlic paste-1 tsp
  • Red chilly powder-1 tsp
  • coriander powder- 1n 1\2 tsp
  • turmeric powder-1\2 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Mint and coriander leaves
  • cardamon - 2
  • Bay leaf-2

How to make Vada curry | Side dish for idli/dosa

  1. Soak dal in water for 2 hrs.Then drain and grind to a coarse paste with all other items to grind .Make small balls of it and steam them in the idli cooker/steamer.
  2. Heat oil in a pan, add in all whole pieces, then add chopped onion and fry till it becomes translucent then add ginger garlic paste cook till raw smell goes.
  3. Add in chopped tomato, cook till mushy, followed by all dry powder mix well. Add a cup of water, check for salt and spices and wait to boil. Meantime break the steamed vada into small pieces.
  4. When it starts to boil add the vada pieces. Check for salt and spices and wait to blend well. Add in mint/coriander leaves.
  5. Serve for idli or dosai.

My Tip:

You can also make this with any leftover lentil fritters. Instead of steaming you can also fry them in oil.
