Ingredients to make Kumbakonam Kadappa (Side dish for Idli & dosa)

  • 1/2 cup Moong dal
  • 2 Potatoes
  • 2 Onions sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic crushed
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as needed
  • 1 tomato chopped ( optional )
  • For Grinding
  • grated coconut 4 tbsp
  • Small piece of ginger
  • small piece of cinnamon
  • 2 cloves
  • 1 tsp khus khus
  • 4_6 green chilies
  • 1 tsp Fennel seeds
  • For tempering
  • 1_2 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • coriander chopped for garnishing

How to make Kumbakonam Kadappa (Side dish for Idli & dosa)

  1. Pressure cook Moong dal and potato.
  2. Mash one potato dal, cut the other potato into cubes .
  3. Grind the ingredients given under grinding into smooth paste. Heat a kadai with oil and temper the given items given under to temper
  4. Add onions, crushed garlic and saute till onions turns transparent ( if you want to add tomato add n saute till it turns mushy).
  5. Now add a cup of water n salt n let it roll boil. Now add the dal n potatoes n grounded masala n simmer for 5_6 minutes ( till the raw smell of masala goes ) stir in between other wise it will get burnt at bottom.
  6. Check the consistency and add water if needed
  7. Garnish with chopped coriander n serve hot with soft soft Idli or crispy dosas.

My Tip:

If you want you can add a dash of lemon juice while serving
