Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. For Dumplings
  2. Channa dal 1/4 cup
  3. Tuvr dal 1/4 cup
  4. 3 red chillies
  5. 2 green chillies
  6. Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  7. 1 tsp Fennel seeds
  8. Coriander leaves
  9. Hing
  10. Salt
  11. For gravy
  12. Lemon size tamarind extract
  13. Onion 2 big puree
  14. Tomato 2-3 puree
  15. Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
  16. Sambar powder 2 tbsp
  17. 1/2 shell grated coconut
  18. Salt
  19. Coriander leaves to garnish
  20. For tempering
  21. Oil
  22. Mustard
  23. Fennel seeds
  24. Methi
  25. Curry leaves
  26. 2 green chillies
  27. 2 red chillies

Instructions

  1. SOAK A LEMON SIZED BALL OF TAMARIND, EXTRACT 2 CUPS OF JUICE, SET ASIDE
  2. TAKE 1/4 CUP EACH OF CHANA & ARHAR DALS
  3. ADD 3 DRY RED CHILLIES, SET ASIDE TO SOAK FOR 2 HOURS
  4. DRAIN THE WATER, ADD 2 GREEN CHILLIES, 1/2 TSP TURMERIC POWDER, 1/4 TSP ASAFOETIDA
  5. ADD 1 TSP FENNEL SEEDS, SALT, ADD TO A MIXER JAR, DRY GRIND INTO A COARSE PASTE
  6. THE BATTER SHOULD BE THICK & NON STICKY LIKE THIS
  7. ADD 2 TSP CHOPPED CORIANDER LEAVES, MIX
  8. SHAPE DUMPLINGS OUT OF THE READY BATTER
  9. STEAM COOK FOR 10 MINS
  10. HEAT 2 TSP OIL, ADD 1 TSP EACH OF MUSTARD & FENNEL SEEDS, 1/2 TSP FENUGREEK SEEDS
  11. ADD 10-12 CURRY LEAVES, 2 GREEN CHILLIES
  12. ADD 2 DRY RED CHILLIES, 2 PUREED ONIONS, SAUTE
  13. ADD 3 PUREED TOMATOES
  14. ADD 1/4 TSP TURMERIC, 2 TBSP SAMBAR POWDER
  15. ADD SALT TO TASTE, MIX
  16. ADD THE READY TAMARIND EXTRACT, BRING TO A BOIL
  17. ADD THE STEAMED DUMPLINGS
  18. ADD 1/2 CUP GRATED FRESH COCONUT, MIX
  19. SIMMER TILL THE OIL SEPARATES & THE DUMPLINGS FLOAT ON TOP LIKE THIS
  20. GARNISH WITH A HANDFUL OF CORIANDER LEAVES, SERVE HOT WITH RICE & ROTI
