ABOUT Lobia ki sabji RECIPE

Lobia also known as black eyed bean. High in nutrients, it can be cooked both as a sabji and dal. It goes well with roti, chawal and naan.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Lobia - 250 gms
  2. Onions - 2 medium
  3. Tomato - 1 big
  4. Cumin seeds - 1/ 2 tspn
  5. Red chillies - 2
  6. Bay leaf - 1
  7. Lwang - 2
  8. Javitri (optional) - 1
  9. Ginger garlic paste - 1 tspn
  10. Haldi - 1/2 tspn
  11. Red chilli powder - 1 tspn
  12. Coriander powder - 1/2 tspn
  13. Black pepper powder - 1/4 tspn
  14. Garam masala -1/2 tspn
  15. Salt
  16. Oil
  17. Water for soaking beans and gravy

Instructions

  1. Soak the lobia in sufficient water for 1 and a half hour.
  2. Heat oil in a pressure cooker, add bay leaf, cumin seeds, chillies, lang, javitri and allow them to crackle.
  3. Add chopped onions and ginger garlic paste and saute.
  4. Add pinch of salt and saute. It will help the onions to turn golden brown fast.
  5. Once the onions have turned brown, start adding haldi, chilli powder, coriander powder, pepper powder.
  6. Allow the masala to leave oil.
  7. Then add tomato puree /blanched tomatoes. Cook for 5 min.
  8. Add salt and mix. Now add the soaked lohia and mix properly for 5 min.
  9. Add water, the level of water should be such that half of your index finger should be in water when measured above lobia
  10. Add salt and mix. Close the lid and pressure cook for 1 whistle.
  11. Slow the flame for 5 to 10 min and then switch off the flame.
  12. Allow it to rest. Open the lid, mash some lobia to make the curry thick (optional).
  13. Lobia ki sabji is ready to serve.
