Ingredients to make Varu Payaru - Traditional Tamilnadu Snacks

  • Mochai Kottai (Field Beans) - 2 cups
  • Chilli powder - as needed
  • Salt - as needed

How to make Varu Payaru - Traditional Tamilnadu Snacks

  1. Wash and soak the field beans in water for 12 hours.
  2. Drain them and remove the skin from the field beans by pressing between the thumb and index finger.
  3. Dry them in a cloth in the sun for half an hour.
  4. These dried ones will be softer than the fresh beans.
  5. Now take the beans little by little and fry in a pan in medium flame till it becomes brown without adding oil.
  6. In the same way you can fry everything. At last add salt and chilli powder and mix well.
  7. Store them in an airtight container when cooled.
  8. This can be kept for more than a month.

My Tip:

You can also use mixed pulses like Green moong, peas, Channa, etc. to make this. or you can make using any one item. In case you are using any other beans, after soaking you can directly dry them in the sun. You can also sprout the beans and make like this.
