Ingredients to make Vazhaipoo Vadai / Banana Flower Vada

  • 1 cup cleaned and chopped banana flower
  • 3/4 cup bengal gram/ chana dal
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds
  • 2 garlic pearls
  • 3 red chillies
  • 1 big onion chopped
  • Oil for frying
  • Curry leaves - a few
  • Mint leaves a few
  • Coriander 1/2 bunch, chopped
  • Salt to taste

How to make Vazhaipoo Vadai / Banana Flower Vada

  1. Clean and chop banana flower. Put it in a bowl of water with some curd in it. This will prevent it from browning.
  2. Drain the water completely. Grind the bengal gram with fennel seeds, red chillies and garlic to a coarse batter.
  3. Squeeze the banana flower and just pulse it.
  4. Add it to the dal mixture and add remaining ingredients, mix well.
  5. Heat oil in a deep pan and shape them into flat patties. Drop them gently in the oil.
  6. Fry on a medium flame, flip both sides till crisp and nice golden brown in colour.
