Tomato Rasam

Ingredients to make Tomato Rasam

  • 8-10 Tomatoes chopped
  • 1/2 cup Tamarind water
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 2 Dry red chilies
  • 8-10 Garlic chopped
  • I inch Ginger
  • 2-3 Curry leaves
  • 2 tbspVegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp Cumin seeds
  • 2 tsp Coriander leaves chopped
  • 1 tsp Urad dal
  • 1 tsp Black pepper
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1/4 tsp Asafoetida/Hing
  • Salt to taste

How to make Tomato Rasam

  1. Blanch the tomatoes, let them cool and mash to make a smooth puree
  2. Add coriander leaves, ginger, garlic, black pepper and cumin seeds in a grinder and make a coarse paste
  3. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and when they splutter add urad dal to it. Stir fry until it becomes slightly brown.
  4. Add hing, red chillies, and curry leaves to it. Stir fry for 2-3 mins.
  5. Add the spice paste and turmeric powder and fry for 1 minute.
  6. Now add in the tomato puree along with tamarind water and water.
  7. Bring to boil and simmer for 10 mins.
  8. Season with salt and coriander leaves. Serve hot!
