ABOUT Prawns Ullarthiyatu RECIPE

Prawns is my favorite seafood. I like the aroma of prawn and its texture. Back in my hometown Kerala mom makes this wonderful dish and I just love it.This is one of heirloom recipes.The spicy, tangy, coconuty and crunchy prawns served with steamed rice or as a starter itself oh I love it so much.. So here is my recipe for Kerala Prawns Ullarthiyathu. Hope you all enjoy it.

Ingredients Serving: 6

  1. 2 kg prawns cleaned and deveined.
  2. 10 shallots sliced.
  3. 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste.
  4. 1 ripped tomato sliced.
  5. 3 green chilies sliced.
  6. 2 tsp tamarind paste.
  7. 2 tsp coriander powder.
  8. 1 tsp chili powder.
  9. 1 tsp of garam masala.
  10. ½ tsp turmeric powder.
  11. 1/4 cup water
  12. 3 tbsp of coconut oil.
  13. Few curry leaves.
  14. Few slices of coconut.
  15. Salt according to taste

Instructions

  1. In a vessel marinate prawns with little ginger-garlic paste, salt ,a pinch of all the spice powders and tamarind paste. Add ¼ glass water and cook till the prawns are half done.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and add in shallots, curry leafs, sliced and chopped coconut and saut well. When the shallots are pink add in chilies and ginger garlic paste and again saut them. Then add in tomato and cook till its mushy. Add in all the spice powders and fry again till oil oozes out from them.
  3. When oil oozes out add in the half cooked prawns along with the stalk (when you will boil prawns in1/4 glass water you will get prawns stalk.)Fry till the stalk is reduced and prawns are well coated.
  4. Garnish it with a stalk of curry leaves. You can serve it as a starter or as a accompliment with steamed rice.
