  • 2.5 cups : coconut milk
  • 1 cup : water
  • 1/4 cup : Roasted chana dal / Putnala pappu
  • 8 to 10 nos : green chillies or to taste
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tsp : oil
  • 1/2 tsp : mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp : cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp : turmeric
  • few curry leaves
  • Few sprigs : coriander chopped

How to make Kobbari Chaaru

  1. Start off by preparing coconut milk : Scrape the white flesh of half of the coconut and grind in a blender using around 2 cups of water, later strain and extract coconut milk using a sieve.
  2. Grind the roasted chana dal along with green chillies into fine paste adding water as required and set aside until use.
  3. Now heat a pan with oil, once hot add the mustard , cumin seeds, curry leaves and let them splutter..
  4. Next add in the turmeric , water , coconut milk , salt and bring this to a soft boil..
  5. Later stir in the ground dal paste and mix well, make sure that no lumps are formed..
  6. Bring this to a boil again until slightly thick similar to the texture of a kadhi, lastly sprinkle with coriander leaves and turn off the heat..
  7. Scrumptious coconut chaaru is ready to be served with hot hot rice !!

My Tip:

You can use store bought coconut milk as well... But freshly extracted adds that extra flavor and sweetness to the chaaru !! You can adjust the spice according to your preference as the coconut milk and dal are subtle in flavor that amount of heat is necessary ...
