ABOUT Key Shaped Eggless Yeasted Bread RECIPE

This cute looking key shaped bread makes an excellent accompaniment to serve even along with some spicy dips or chutneys for a starter. Did you know, shaping bread in key shapes is quite a tradition in Jewish cuisine!

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 1 cup Bread flour
  2. 1+1/2 cup All purpose flour
  3. 1+1/4 tsp Active dry yeast
  4. 1/2 tsp salt
  5. 75 grams Butter (room temperature)
  6. 1/2 cup milk
  7. 1+1/2 tablespoon Sugar
  8. 1+ 1/2 cup Luke warm water

Instructions

  1. Stir the luke warm water, 1/2 tablespoon sugar and yeast in a small bowl and let it stand for 5 minutes until the mixture turns foamy.
  2. Melt the butter, then add the milk to it and heat till it is lukewarm.
  3. Take together the yeast mixture, remaining sugar, butter mixture, bread flour and salt in a bowl, then stir in the all purpose flour and knead everything to make a slightly sticky dough.
  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until the dough turns smooth and elastic. Arrange the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a plastic wrap, keep it in a warm place for 1 hour.
  5. Divide the dough into 16 medium sized balls. Roll a ball as a long rope and the other ball as another medium sized rope. Cut the medium sized rope as long piece, followed by two or three small pieces.
  6. Now arrange the long piece and top it with the long rope by twisting it to form the head of the key.
  7. Keep the small pieces to the edge of the long piece of the dough and arrange them over a baking tray lined with a baking sheet. Let the dough rise, cover it loosely and keep it aside for 15 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350°F or 176°C for 5 minutes. Brush the top of the key shaped dough with milk and bake it in the middle of the oven until it's golden for 15 to 20 minutes.
  9. Let the rolls cools completely. Enjoy.
