Hilsa Bhapa/ Steamed Hilsa

Ingredients to make Hilsa Bhapa/ Steamed Hilsa

  • mustard powder 2 tablespoon
  • Poppy seed 1 tablespoon
  • salt to taste
  • turmeric 1 teaspoon
  • mustard oil 2 teaspoon
  • green chillies 2-3

How to make Hilsa Bhapa/ Steamed Hilsa

  1. Soak the mustard powder in lukewarm water with a pinch of salt for about 15 minutes and mix it well. Also soak the poppy seeds for 2 hours in lukewarm water.
  2. Grind the poppy seeds along with the green chillies to form a thick paste.
  3. In a tiffin box, add the mustard paste, poppy seeds paste, turmeric, salt to taste, green chilli paste, mustard oil 1 teaspoon and marinate the hilsa pieces properly in this mixture, then add a few slit green chillies on the top. Drizzle some more mustard oil on the top if you wish, cover it with a lid.
  4. Take a pressure cooker and place this container in a pool of water. Cook it for about 15 minutes.
  5. Serve it with rice.

My Tip:

The taste of the gravy depends on the quantity and quality of the mustard paste and mustard oil.
