Ingredients to make Turtle Bread

  • 2 and 1/2 cups of flour
  • 3/4 tablespoon dry active yeast
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 and 1/2 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 cup luke warm water for yeast proofing
  • 1/2 cup water or as needed to knead the dough
  • 2 peppercorns

How to make Turtle Bread

  1. In luke warm water mix in the sugar and add the yeast in it. Stir it and let it sit for 5 minutes or till the yeast proofs.
  2. Meanwhile sieve the dough in a bowl and make a dent in the middle of it, add oil and salt in it.
  3. The yeast should be ready by now. Stir it well and mix in the flour mixture to make the dough with the rest of the water. It will be a sticky dough. Knead it on a flat surface for 5-10 minutes till it becomes a soft dough.
  4. Keep it in a greased bowl, cover it with a cling wrap and keep it in a warm place for 2 hours or till it doubles in size.
  5. Once it doubles, punch it and knead it again. Make five balls, 1 for the face, 2 for hands, 2 for legs and a big one for the back. Set it as seen in the picture, use peppercorns for the eyes and give the turtle stripes with the help of a knife.
  6. Set it in a greased baking tray and let it rise for 30 mins. Then brush it with milk on top.
  7. Preheat the oven and bake it for 30 mins at 190 degrees celsius or till the top crust changes it colour.
  8. Once baked, let it cool on a wire rack.

My Tip:

Eggetarians can brush it with egg before baking as this gives it a beautiful golden color.
