ABOUT Black night shade/Manathakkali greens curry RECIPE

This is a simple curry recipe, which is a part of everyday meal. It is also called poriyal and is dry curry that can be eaten as a side dish for Sambar and rasam. I followed my Mom's recipe.

Ingredients Serving: 3

  1. Black night shade leaves/ Maathakkali keerai 2 bunches
  2. Moong dal 3/4 cup
  3. Red chilli and green chillies 2 each
  4. Grated coconut 4 tbsp
  5. Mustard seeds 1 tsp
  6. Urad dal 1 tsp
  7. Asafoetida 1/2 tsp
  8. Haldi/ Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  9. Salt to taste
  10. Sugar 1/2 tsp
  11. Oil 2 tsp

Instructions

  1. Take out the leaves from the greens bunch. Rinse and cut the leaves.
  2. Wash the moong dal and soak it in a glass of water for 30 mins.
  3. In a pan/vessel, take the soaked dal and cut the greens. Add 1 more glass of water and cook till the dal is 3/4 done. If necessary excess water can be strained.
  4. In another kadai/pan, heat the oil, add in the mustard seeds, urad dal, asafoetida and fry till the dal turs golden.
  5. Add the cooked greens and dal and saute. Next add the salt and haldi/turmeric.
  6. Finally add the grated coconut, sugar and stir it once. This healthy curry is ready to be served.
