Modak

Ingredients to make Modak

  • For the Filling:
  • 1-2 cardamoms
  • 1 cup freshly grated coconut
  • 1/2 cup shakkar (that is different from normal sugar) or jaggery
  • 1/2 tsp ghee
  • 1/2 cup cashews, chopped
  • For the outer covering:
  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 1 and 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 tsp ghee
  • A pinch of salt

How to make Modak

  1. To prepare the filling, take a pan and add ghee to heat. Then add in the chopped cashews and saute it well.
  2. Next add in the grated coconut and cook it for a minute. Then add in the shakkar and mix it properly, cook until the moisture evaporates and it becomes soggy.
  3. To prepare the outer covering, take a pan and add water, then bring it to a boil.
  4. Add ghee and salt to it, then add the rice flour and mix it well. Turn off the gas and cover it for 4-5 mins.
  5. Once it is cooled, make a smooth dough out of this mixture.
  6. Take a small portion of the dough and make a ball out of it. Spread it with your thumbs and fingers.
  7. Fill 1 spoon filling of the mixture and give it the shape of modaks.
  8. Prepare the steamer, then put in all the modaks into the steamer and cook it for about 15 minutes.
  9. Serve it warm for best taste.

My Tip:

You can add other dry fruits as well.
