Ingredients Serving: 6

  1. Green gram dal - 1 cup
  2. Raw rice - 1/2 cup
  3. Salt to taste
  4. For wet grinding:
  5. Grated fresh coconut 1/4 cup
  6. Green chillies 6
  7. Ginger - 1 small piece
  8. Asafoetida - 2 pinches
  9. Oil - 1 1/2 tbsp
  10. Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp

Instructions

  1. Wash and soak the green gram dal for 6 to 8 hours.
  2. Wash and soak the rice for one hour. (Soak the dal and the rice separately)
  3. Grind each separately to get a coarse consistency. Mix together.
  4. Add salt and ferment for 6 to 8 hours.
  5. Before making the idlis, grind together the coconut gratings, green chillies, ginger piece, asafoetida and add to the ground mixture.
  6. Heat oil and let the mustard seeds splutter. Pour this over the batter.
  7. Steam idlis in the usual manner for 10 minutes.
