Ingredients to make Aloo wali Dal (Moong chilka with potato)

  • Moong chilka - 1 cup
  • potato - 1
  • salt as per taste
  • turmeric (Haldi) - 1/2 tsp
  • For Tadka :
  • ghee - 2 tsp
  • Sabut jeera - 1/2 tsp
  • hing a pinch
  • coriander Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • red chilli powder - 1/2 tsp
  • amchur powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Garam masala - 1/2 tsp

How to make Aloo wali Dal (Moong chilka with potato)

  1. Wash the moong chilka dal properly.
  2. Cut potato in small thin pieces.
  3. Take a heavy bottomed pan or a pressure cooker and add the dal and potato.
  4. Add salt and haldi.
  5. Put water in the cooker just about covering the dal and potato. You can add water later if required.
  6. Let it come to a boil and then turn the flame to low.
  7. Cover the cooker with a lid. We do not need to pressure cook the dal. Keep checking in 10 minutes till potatoes are cooked.
  8. Now take a Tadka pan and put ghee in it. Once the ghee is hot, add jeera, hing, coriander powder and red chilli powder. Add the Tadka to the dal. Mix well. Now add the amchur and the garam masala. Mix and turn off the gas.
  9. Enjoy hot with chapatis.

My Tip:

The dal has a tendency to double up on boiling. So you need to take care while measuring. If the water dries out, you can add warm water as required.
