Pide – Turkish Flat Bread

Ingredients to make Pide – Turkish Flat Bread

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 stick (50 gms / 1/4 cup) butter softened
  • ½ tablespoon instant dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon salt
  • ¾ cups warm water
  • 1 teaspoon each of Sesame seeds & Nigella seeds for topping

How to make Pide – Turkish Flat Bread

  1. In a large mixing bowl, mix all the dry ingredients. Add butter and mix well. Add about 1 cup water and bring together all the ingredients. Add more water and knead for 5 to 8 minutes. The dough should be sticky.
  2. Cover the bowl with and keep in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled.
  3. Knead again for about 4 to 5 minutes till dough becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Grease a baking tray. Transfer the dough to the tray and stretch it with your hands to a rectangle. Take a sharp knife and cut square shapes in the dough (refer picture).
  5. Sprinkle sesame and nigella seeds on top. Cover with a kitchen towel and let the dough rise for 30 minutes.
  6. Bake Pide in the preheated oven at 180 degrees C for 30 to 35 minutes or till the top turns a beautiful golden brown.
  7. Remove from oven. Cool in the rack. Slice when cold.
My Tip: Stretch the dough into a rectangle almost as big as the standard baking tray (about 10 inches x 61/2 inches). You may adjust the size according to your baking tray.
