Prawn Chettinad Curry

Ingredients to make Prawn Chettinad Curry

  • Prawns- 250 gms, cleaned
  • onion- 1 large sized, finely chopped
  • tomato- 1, finely chopped
  • Green chilli- 1
  • ginger-Garlic paste- 1/2 tsp
  • tamarind paste- 1/2 tsp
  • Red chilli powder- 1 tsp
  • turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp
  • coriander powder- 1/2 tsp
  • curry leaves- a handful
  • mustard seeds- 1/4 tsp
  • hing a pinch
  • salt as per taste
  • To roast and grind:
  • cumin seeds- 1/2 tsp
  • fennel seeds- 1/2 tsp
  • fenugreek seeds- 1/4 tsp
  • coriander seeds- 1/2 tsp
  • Black peppercorns- 5
  • cinnamon- 1 inch piece
  • cloves- 3
  • poppy seeds- 1/2 tsp
  • mace- a small strand
  • Green cardamom- 1 peeled
  • Red chillies 4-5
  • oil- 2 tbsp

How to make Prawn Chettinad Curry

  1. Roast the spices under 'roast & grind' and keep it aside to cool. Then grind it to a fine powder form.
  2. Chop the onion, tomato and green chilli finely.
  3. Heat oil in a pan. Put in mustard seeds and let it splutter. Then add in the hing and curry leaves.
  4. Next, add in the onions and green chilli. Fry till the onions are soft.
  5. Now add in the tomato, tamarind paste, ginger-garlic paste, chilli powder, coriander powder and turmeric. Cook till the tomatoes are soft.
  6. Put in the prawns, salt and grounded masala powder. Pour in about a cup of water. Simmer till the prawns are cooked and the gravy is a little thick.
  7. Serve it hot with rice.
