Chinese Idli

Ingredients to make Chinese Idli

  • 1 cup semolina/ suji
  • 2/3 cup besan
  • 4 tsp eno
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • Luke warm water as required
  • For the Tadka:
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 tbsp crushed garlic
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli paste or red chilli powder
  • 1 small onion cut into juliennes
  • Vegetables- 1/2 cup Cabbage,1 cup capsicum, 1 cup carrot, shredded
  • 3 cloves/laung crushed
  • 3 tbsp tomato puree
  • 1 tbsp tomato ketchup
  • 1 tbsp chilli sauce
  • 2 tsp soya sauce
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • salt to taste

How to make Chinese Idli

  1. To prepare the idlis, mix the suji, besan, salt and eno with luke warm water to make the idli batter (consistency). Then leave it aside for 20 mins.
  2. Grease the idli moulds, then cook the idlis in the cooker by steaming it for 10 mins.
  3. To prepare the chinese tadka, heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan, then add in the garlic and red chilli paste. Stir for a minute till it's fragrant.
  4. Add in the onion and stir fry till the onions turn golden in colour. Then add in all the vegetables stir fry for a few minutes.
  5. Reduce the heat, then add the cloves, tomato puree, tomato ketchup, red chilli sauce, soya sauce, black pepper and salt. Let it cook for 2 mins on a low heat.
  6. Cut 10-12 idlis into 4 pieces and add it to the sauce. Stir fry for a minute, then check it and serve it hot.

My Tip:

You can add any vegetables to this recipe, the more the better.
