Shahi Daal

Ingredients to make Shahi Daal

  • Toor daal 1 cup
  • tomato 1
  • turmeric powder 1 tsp
  • cumin seeds 2 tbsp
  • bay leaf 1
  • fennel seeds 1 tbsp
  • cloves 8
  • cinnamon stick 2 inches
  • garlic paste 2 tsp
  • red chilli powder 2 tbsp
  • Garam masala 1 tbsp
  • coriander powder 2 tbsp
  • Few curry leaves
  • Chopped ginger 1 tsp
  • oil 5-8 tbsp
  • salt to taste

How to make Shahi Daal

  1. Pressure cook the toor daal, turmeric powder and tomato together till 6-7 whistles blow. Once the dal cooks, separate the tomatoes from the dal and mash the dal.
  2. In a frying pan, pour some oil and let the oil heat.
  3. Once the oil is heated, add in the cumin seeds, cloves, cinnamon stick, fennel seeds and fry it.
  4. Once it is fried, add in the bay leaf, finely chopped ginger, 3 curry leaves, garlic paste, red chilli powder, coriander powder and garam masala.
  5. Stir it and let it fry. Pour in some water to the mixture and let it boil for 2 minutes on a high flame.
  6. Then reduce the flame and add in the mashed daal, add salt to taste and let it simmer for 5 minutes.
  7. Then turn off the heat and add 1 tbsp of lemon juice and stir well.
  8. Transfer it into a beautiful dish and garnish it with coriander leaves and ginger juliennes.

My Tip:

Frying spice powders with a small quantity of water will enhance the flavor of this dish.
