Mixed Sprout Chaat

Ingredients to make Mixed Sprout Chaat

  • 1 cup black gram
  • 1 cup whole green gram (moong)
  • 1 tomato CHOPPED
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 2 cucumbers chopped
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • a few curry leaves
  • Chaat masala as per taste
  • Chana masala a few tsp
  • Green onions chopped a few (Optional)
  • Bell peppers or capsicum (red, yellow or green)
  • Chopped coriander 1/2 bunch

How to make Mixed Sprout Chaat

  1. Wash and soak the chana and the moong overnight or atleast 6-7 hours. Put the moong and the chana separately in two damp muslin cloths.
  2. Put them in the fridge and keep sprinkling a little water over them to make sure that the cloth does not dry. During winters, put them in a muslin cloth and cover them. Leave them on the kitchen counter.
  3. Once they both have sprouted well, we are ready to make our chat.
  4. In a pan with medium-high heat, add in a tbsp of oil. Wait for a minute before adding in the mustard seeds. Let them crackle.
  5. Add in the curry leaves. Add in the sprouted moong and chana , followed by salt , a tsp of red chilli powder and chana masala.
  6. Stir well. Let it cook till the sprouts look crispy, but not to the point where they become too hard .
  7. Chop all the vegetables, in a large bowl. Put in the masala sprouts and add all the vegetables.
  8. Add in chaat masala and coriander. Mix everything well and your healthy snack is ready.

My Tip:

It is advisable to soak the lentils overnight to obtain softer and tender sprouts. Keep adjusting the flame while frying the sprouts. You can also add in finely chopped green chillies if desired. Make sure to keep sprinkling water on the muslin cloth while it is in the fridge because if it becomes dry, sprouting won't take place properly.
