Ingredients to make Brinjal Gravy(Pitlai in Tamil)

  • tamarind water 1 cup
  • Thur dal 1\2 cup
  • Chana dal 1 tbsp
  • peanuts 1\2 cup
  • Green peas 1\4 cup
  • Grated coconut 1\2 cup
  • Sambar powder1 tsp
  • hing powder 1 pinch
  • turmeric powder 1\2 tsp
  • 1/4 kg or 5 small eggplant, cut into cubes
  • A pinch of jaggery
  • salt to taste
  • For grinding - 4-5 of dry red chillies, 3 tbsp of channa dal,4 tbsp of coriander seeds,few fenugreek seeds
  • For Tempering - 1 tbsp sesame oil, 1/4 tsp mustard seeds,1/4 tsp urad dal, 1/8 tsp fenugreek seeds, A few curry leaves, 1/2 cup grated coconut

How to make Brinjal Gravy(Pitlai in Tamil)

  1. In a cooker, add Thur dal, chana dal, turmeric powder, peanuts, required amount of water and cook for 3 whistles.
  2. Cook Brinjal and green peas in tamarind water along with turmeric powder and salt.
  3. Heat oil in another pan.Add all ingredients given for grinding purpose and half quantity of grated coconut. Stir for about 4 to 5 minutes or until turn light brown. Grind this mixture adding a little water and keep aside.
  4. Heat oil in a pan.Add mustard seeds, let them crackle, add all tempering ingredients, asafoetida and curry leaves.
  5. Then add the cooked brinjal and then the ground paste.Cook until the raw smell goes. Add cooked tuvar dal and stir well.
  6. Fry the remaining grated coconut till they turn a little brown and add it to thicken the gravy further and to make the dish tastier.
  7. Garnish with curry leaves and serve with hot rice, chapati, naan, dosa,etc.
