The ‘quick fix’ chana dal chutney!

Ingredients to make The ‘quick fix’ chana dal chutney!

  • 1 cup split bengal gram (chana dal)
  • 1 tablespoon cumin seeds (Jeera)
  • 2 tablespoons shredded coconut (optional)
  • 2 - 3 red chillies (may vary as per taste)
  • 3 - 4 teaspoons tamarind pulp/water (may vary as per taste)
  • ¼ - ½ cup water (may need more for desired consistency)
  • salt as per taste

How to make The ‘quick fix’ chana dal chutney!

  1. 1. Fry chana dala and jeera in a wok (kadhai), until the raw odor of the dal is dispelled and until faint reddish color is seen. Do not let it turn brown (or get burnt)
  2. 2. Fry chilies (made into pieces) separately for minutes in a wok (kadhai) Dry grind the chillies first, followed by chana dal and jeera. Add shredded coconut (optional), then add the tamarind pulp to make a paste .
  3. 3. Add water and salt. Grind to a smooth paste until coarse or fine . 4. Note: You may grind the chutney to have a coarser chutney or finer chutney, as per your taste/ preference.
  4. 5. Adding Jeera and shredded coconut is optional. However these add an enhanced zing to this chutney.

My Tip:

Ensure the chutney is not too runny by adding just the right amount of tamarind water (water in which tamarind has been soaked).
