ABOUT Broken wheat with turkey berries upma RECIPE

This is a simple & easy upma which is made by combining Broken wheat (Dhalia) and turkey berries (Sundaikkai in tamil). Both these main ingredients are very good for health and in particular for those who are diabetic.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. TurkeyBerries – ½ cup
  2. Broken Wheat/ Dhalia – 1 cup
  3. Water – 2 cups
  4. Turmeric – ½ teaspoon
  5. Green chili – 3 finely
  6. Ginger – 1 inch finely
  7. Hing powder – ½ teaspoon
  8. Mustard – 1 teaspoon
  9. Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
  10. Channa dhal – 1 teaspoon
  11. Peanuts – 2 teaspoon
  12. Fenugreek seeds - 1 teaspoon
  13. Curry leaves – few
  14. Coriander - few
  15. Oil – 1 tablespoon
  16. Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Slit the turkey berries (do not cut them). Chop onion, ginger, green chili finely.
  2. Take a pressure cooker, add oil, hing, mustard, peanuts, Bengal gram, fenugreek seeds, cumin seeds and let it fry.
  3. Add chili, ginger , curry leaves and fry.
  4. Add turkey berries and fry until they are cooked but at the same time a bit crunchy.
  5. Add 2 cups of water, turmeric and salt. Allow it to boil.
  6. When it starts to boil, add the broken wheat slowly and stir it for 1 minute so that no lumps are formed.
  7. Close the pressure pan and cook until the pressure cooker gives 3 whistles.
  8. Switch off the gas and open the cooker once the pressure releases. Mix them once and garnish with coriander leaves.
  9. Serve them with a raita or chutney.
