Ingredients to make Arisi Upma / Rice Upma

  • rice 1 cup
  • Toor dal 2 tbspn
  • pepper 1 tbspn
  • cumin seeds 1 tbspn
  • coconut oil 6 tbspn
  • mustard seeds 1 tbspn
  • Channa dal 2 tbspn
  • Red Chili 4
  • curry leaves few
  • Shredded coconut 1/4 cup
  • water 5 Cups
  • salt 2 tbsp
  • hing 1 tbsp

How to make Arisi Upma / Rice Upma

  1. Take the rice and toor dal in a bowl and soak it with water for 1 hour. Then strain the water completely.
  2. Spread it in a white towel and keep it in shadow for 20 mints .If we touch it with hands lite moisture to be there. It should not be completely dry.Then collect it together.
  3. Add it to blender along with cumin seeds and pepper. Grind it coarsely. Then sieve to remove the flour from it and take the kurunai separately.Arisi kurunai is ready.
  4. In a pressure cooker heat the oil . Once hot add the mustard seeds allow it to pop . Then add the channa dal and turns golden.
  5. Add the curry leaves , red chili , water , salt and hing. Once the water is heated add the grated coconut to it.
  6. Bring it to boil then add the arisi rava slowly by keep on mixing without lumps . Then pressure cook it for three whistle in med to high flame. Then open the cooker once pressure subsides.
  7. Now the arisi upma puma is ready to serve.

My Tip:

1. Using coconut oil gives the excellent flavor to this upma. 2. If you fear in cook in pressure cooker. Then do it in open pan as usual upma. But once you mix rava cook in low flame by keeping covered. 3. If it get burnt at bottom also don't worry. Usually the kandhal(burnt one) will be tasty.
