ABOUT Tharvani Charu / Fermented Gruel Rasam RECIPE

Tharvani Charu is a rasam made of fermented gruel and is rich in proteins and vitamins.To prepare the gruel, I preferred brown rice as it is more healthy.This delicious rasam is best to serve with hot steamed rice.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. For the Gruel preparation - 1 cup Brown Rice
  2. 3 cups water
  3. For the rasam preparation - 2 cups Gruel
  4. 1 cup Mixed vegetables , sliced, (brinjal and okra used here)
  5. 1 tomato
  6. 2 green chillies
  7. Salt to taste
  8. 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  9. Water - as required
  10. To Temper - Cooking oil , as required
  11. 1/4 teaspoon mustard seeds
  12. 1/4 teaspoon cumin seeds
  13. 1/4 teaspoon Fenugreek Seeds
  14. 1/4 teaspoon Coriander seeds

Instructions

  1. First prepare the Gruel - Wash the brown rice and pour sufficient amount of water to it. Now allow it to boil for 10 to 15 minutes over medium flame.
  2. Check whether the morsel is cooked or not. Once cooked, drain the gruel.
  3. Take 2 glasses of this gruel in a bowl and ferment it for 3 days. During the process of fermentation, protein gets added and the gruel becomes rich in vitamins and proteins.
  4. You can also add a spoonful of cooked brown rice to it. (Optional)
  5. In a pan, pour sufficient amount of water. Add the vegetables, tomato slices, green chillies, turmeric powder, salt and allow it to boil over medium flame until the vegetables become tender.
  6. Once boiled, add the fermented gruel to it. Let it to boil for 5 to 10 minutes or until the mixture is cooked.
  7. The next step is to temper the rasam. Heat oil and saute the mustard seeds. When they start to crackle, add all the other tempering ingredients one after the other and fry for a minute.
  8. Transfer this tempering to the fermented gruel rasam and it is ready to be served.
  9. Serve Tharvani Charu along with Hot Steamed rice.
