About MALWANI FISH CURRY Recipe

Malwan, being a coastal area in Konkan, near Goa. Malwani Food is similar to Goan cuisine, unique in taste, spicy and aromatic. Use of coconut and kokum is another distinct feature. I have learned this curry from my mother. It tastes extremely fantastic with rice and fried fish.

In Malvani fish curry recipe, the pieces of fish are cooked with a lot of pan seared masalas that gives it a perfect fragrant. Malvani fish curry is adapted from the other fish recipes. Malvani fish curry recipe is quick and easy to prepare. It is a rich blend of herbs, spices and condiments. Curry of this recipe is prepared by grated coconut, chopped onions, ginger garlic paste and all the Indian masalas that give it a perfect texture. MALWANI FISH CURRY

Ingredients to make MALWANI FISH CURRY

  • King fish ( Surmai fish ) 200 gm pieces ( 10-12 pieces )
  • For marination :--
  • salt 1 tsp
  • turmeric 1 pinch
  • lemon juice 1 tsp
  • For paste :-
  • Dried Red Chillies ( Bedgi Mirch ) 3/4 cup. If u prefer less spicy then use Kashmiri mirch.
  • turmeric 1/4 tsp
  • garlic pods 5
  • coriander seeds powder 1 tsp
  • onion chopped 1 tsp
  • coriander leaves 1 tbsp
  • Freshly scraped coconut 1 cup
  • water
  • For Tadka. : --
  • oil 1 tbsp
  • garlic Pods 2
  • onion chopped 1 tsp
  • For curry. : --
  • kokum 4-5
  • salt to taste
  • water
  • For garnishing. :--
  • coriander leaves chopped handful

How to make MALWANI FISH CURRY

  1. Clean the fish pieces and wash thoroughly.
  2. Rub 1 tsp salt allover the fish pieces with 1 tsp lime juice and a pinch of turmeric and set aside to marinate for 10 mins.
  3. Grind dried red chillies, 5 garlic pods, 1 tsp chopped onion, coriander seeds, turmeric and coriander leaves with little water. Grind it very fine in a small size grinder ( chutney grinder) as shown below :
  4. Now transfer this paste to a big grinder along with the coconut. Add little water to adjust the consistency and again grind it well.
  5. Wash marinated fish 2 times in water and drain.
  6. Heat the heavy bottom vessel on a medium flame and add in 1 tbsp oil.
  7. Add 2 garlic pods in hot oil. when they turns golden brown add 1 tsp chopped onion.
  8. keep stiring. When onion turns dark brown, Immediately pour coconut-red chillies paste in it. Put the gas on simmer and place a lid on vessel.
  9. After 2 mins open the lid, add 4-5 kokum and water little by little, stir well.. Curry should have slightly thick consistency and dark red colour, so adjust the consistency.
  10. Add salt to test, stir well and let it cook on medium flame.
  11. Once d entire mixture reaches a boil, add fish pieces to curry.
  12. Let curry cook on a medium flame for 5 mins, Gentally stir the curry. Garnish with coriander leaves on top and turn off d gas.
  13. Malwani Fish curry is ready.
  14. Serve with rice or rotis.

My Tip:

Do not overcook the fish as fish cooks quickly. Do try this and enjoy the authentic flavours of Malwani cuisine.
