Daal Fry

Ingredients to make Daal Fry

  • 1/2 cup - tuvar dal (soaked for half hour and boiled)
  • Oil as required
  • 1 tsp - Asafoetida
  • 3 tbsp - Ghee
  • 3 tbsp - garlic (finely chopped)
  • 2 tbsp - ginger paste
  • 3 - Cloves
  • 1 tsp - green chili paste
  • 1 onion - finely chopped
  • 1 - tomato (finely chopped)
  • 2 tsp - Red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp - Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp - garam masala
  • For Tempering:
  • 2 tbsp - Oil
  • 1 tbsp - cumin seeds
  • 2 tsp - Red chili powder
  • 3 - green chilies slit
  • 2 tbsp - coriander leaves
  • Lemon juice when serving

How to make Daal Fry

  1. Soak the dal for half an hour. Pressure cook with enough water, oil, asafoetida and salt.
  2. Let it cool. In a kadai, heat ghee and oil. Splutter cumin seeds and cloves. As it pops, add in and saute the garlic followed by ginger paste for 1 minute.Adding chopped onion saute lightly till just transparent.
  3. Add in grated tomatoes. Saute for 2 minutes.
  4. Add red chili powder, turmeric powder, green chilies paste. Mix well.
  5. Now add boiled dal. Mix well. Add garam masala. If needed add water and mix well.
  6. For tempering: In a small vessel, heat oil. Splutter some cumin seeds. As soon as it pops fully, switch off the flame and add red chili powder and some slit chilies.
  7. Top the dal with this tempering. Garnish with chopped coriander.
  8. Serve hot with lemon and hot jeera rice. Enjoy!

My Tip:

Increase proportion of both red, green chilies and garam masala if want it to be more hot and spicy.
