Chana dal

Ingredients to make Chana dal

  • 100g chana dal or chickpea lentils or Bengal gram
  • 2 green chillies finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chilly powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida(heeng)
  • 1 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 tablespoon coriander leaves finely chopped

How to make Chana dal

  1. Soak chana dal in water for 2 hours.Wash it and take it out from the water.Now tranfer the chana dal in a pressure cooker.Add 1/2 tablespoon of salt and 1 cup of water.
  2. Heat pressure cooker on medium flame and after one whistle,lower the flame and cook for 7-8 minutes and then switch off the burner(total of 5-6 whistles).
  3. Meanwhile heat olive oil in a deep pan and add cumin seeds and onions.Saute until golden brown.
  4. Grind tomatoes and green chillies to make a thick paste.Add ginger- garlic paste in the pan and then add tomato paste.
  5. Stir for 2-4 minutes.Now add salt,turmeric powder,red chilly powder,coriander powder,garam masala and hing.Mix well.
  6. Now remove the lid of the cooker and transfer chana dal to the pan.Cook for 4-5 minutes.
  7. Garnish with some coriander leaves and serve with chappatis or rice.
