ABOUT Chana Daal with Lauki (bottlegourd) RECIPE

Just like Dal makhani, chana dal is also a very popular lentil in North India. It can be cooked as it is or with the addition of some vegetables. My mother used to cook it with spinach, kulfa and bottlegourd (Lauki). In my family everyone loves chana dal in all its forms.

  1. Chana daal- 1cup
  2. Lauki chopped- 300gm
  3. Onion chopped-1
  4. Tomato chopped-2 medium
  5. Ginger chopped-1
  6. Green chillies chopped-2
  7. Coriander whole-3/4 tsp
  8. Coriander powder-1 tsp
  9. Turmeric powder-1/2tsp
  10. Red chilli powder-3/4 tsp
  11. Garam masala- 1/2 tsp
  12. Salt to taste
  13. Clarified butter (desi ghee)- 1tbsp

Instructions

  1. Wash and pick chana dal. Put it in a pressure cooker add water, salt and turmeric powder and put on the lid. Now pressure cook till three whistles. Let the pressure release itself.
  2. In another pan add oil, add chopped tomatoes and cook till oil separates. Add salt, turmeric powder, coriander powder and chopped green chillies. Then add chopped lauki or bottlegourd and a cup of water. Stir and cook for 5-7 minutes.
  3. Combine dal and lauki and let it simmer covered on slow flame till dal and lauki is soft and cooked properly. It will take approximately 10-15 minutes. Or you can again pressure cook for 5 minutes on medium flame.
  4. Now make the tadka- heat ghee add whole coriander seeds crushed between your palms. It will enhance the flavour of the seeds. When light brown add ginger, chopped onion and cook till light brown.
  5. Add Kashmiri red chillies powder, coriander powder and garam masala. Remove from flame and transfer to the serving bowl. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
  6. Serve hot with chappati or parantha.
