Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. Red lentils or masoor dal 1 cup
  2. Tomatoes medium sized chopped 3
  3. Green chillies whole 3
  4. Onion chopped large 1
  5. Salt to taste
  6. Red chilli powder 1 1/2 tsp
  7. Turmeric 1/2 tsp
  8. Ginger garlic paste 1 tsp
  9. Coriander leaves chopped a handful
  10. Oil 3 tbsp

Instructions

  1. In a pan, heat the oil and saute the onions until done. Add the ginger garlic paste, green chillies and the tomatoes.
  2. Meanwhile wash the lentils and soak in equal quantity of drinking water. Do not use more water because this might make the daal mushy. As this daal cooks fast, it requires minimal amount of water.
  3. Saute them all well on medium flame until the tomatoes are tender and soft.
  4. Add the turmeric and the red chilli powder. Mix well and let it simmer.
  5. Allow it to simmer until done. It will be done in 7 to 8 mins. Cover it up while simmering.
  6. Now add the daal along with the water in which it was soaked and mix well. Cover it up and let it simmer on medium flame. Add the salt also and the coriander leaves too. Reserve some leaves for the final garnishing just before serving.
  7. The daal cooks pretty much fast and it will be done in just 10 to 12 mins on medium flame. Do not stir it too much. Just mix it slightly and leave for simmering.
  8. Serve this hot with parathas or phulkas.
