Ingredients to make Tomato Onion Gravy - Basic Gravy

  • cumin seeds
  • mustard seeds (optional)
  • Pinch of Asofetida
  • ginger paste 1/2 tablespoon
  • garlic paste 1/2 tablespoon
  • green chillies paste / chopped 1 tablespoon
  • Red onion diced 1 cup
  • tomatoes diced 1 cup
  • oil
  • red chilli powder 1/2 tablespoon
  • turmeric powder 1/2 tablespoon
  • coriander powder 1/2 tablespoon
  • Garam masala 1/4 tablespoon
  • salt according to taste

How to make Tomato Onion Gravy - Basic Gravy

  1. Heat oil in a saucepan. Once the oil is hot, add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. BEWARE : Mustard seeds might fly off while crackling.
  2. Once the cumin seeds and mustard seeds start crackling, add a pinch of asafoetida and add ginger, garlic and green chillies paste. Mix well.
  3. Add chopped onions and saute the onions till golden brown.
  4. Once the onions are cooked, add chopped tomatoes and mix well. Add salt according to taste, red chilli powder, coriander powder and turmeric powder. Mix well.
  5. Saute the prepared mix and cook well. Add Garam Masala and mix again.
  6. The gravy is READY! Enjoy the gravy with rice, or add boiled / chopped vegetables to make sabji.
