Dhokar Daalna

Ingredients to make Dhokar Daalna

  • Arhar daal - 1/2 cup
  • chana daal - 1/2 cup
  • Green chilli - 2
  • ginger - 1 inch piece (one)
  • tomato - 1 fine paste
  • ginger - 1 tbsp fine paste
  • jeera powder - 1 tbsp
  • haldi powder - 1 tsp
  • Garam masala powder - 1 tsp
  • Diced potatoes (optional for the gravy)
  • 1 tbsp of mustard oil

How to make Dhokar Daalna

  1. Soak daal overnight. Blend it into a fine paste with ginger and green Chilli.
  2. Saute the paste in a tbsp of oil in a Kadhai till it leaves the surface.
  3. Add haldi powder and salt according to taste.
  4. Spoon the daal dough on a greased plate and cut it into the shape of a barfi.
  5. Shallow fry them and keep aside.
  6. For the gravy add a tbsp of mustard oil. Temper with a pinch of hing and jeera.
  7. Blend in jeera, tomatoes, chilli, ginger to a fine paste and saute till oil separates.
  8. Add haldi powder, salt, a tbsp of sugar and keep stirring till oil separates adding water to make a gravy like consistency.
  9. Add the fried daal vadaas (dhoka - as we call it) and simmer for 5-10 mins.
  10. Finally add garam masala and a tbsp of ghee and cover with a lid.
  11. Switch off the gas.
  12. Garnish with coriander leaves, green chilli and serve hot.
  13. Enjoy with steamed rice.

My Tip:

You can also add diced potatoes. Fry them and add to the gravy.
