Ingredients to make Dhokar dalna

  • Chana dal (soaked) - 1 cup
  • Kalaunji/onion seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Jeera - 1 tsp
  • Dry red chillies - 2
  • Bay leaf - 1
  • Tomatoes (chopped) - 2
  • Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
  • Jeera Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Red Chilly powder - 1 tsp
  • Ginger Paste - 1 tsp
  • Salt
  • Refined oil
  • Garam masala powder - 1/4 th tsp

How to make Dhokar dalna

  1. Strain the Chana dal and coarsely paste it using minimal amount if water in a mixer grinder.
  2. Heat a nonstick pan with little oil.
  3. Add the kalaunji followed by the Chana dal paste.
  4. Add little Turmeric powder and salt. Cook till the paste becomes a dough and excess water is soaked.
  5. Now roll this dough and cut into diamond shapes.
  6. Heat ample amount of oil in a kadhai and deep fry these chana Dal paste pieces. Keep aside.
  7. Now to make the gravy, heat little oil in a kadhai.
  8. Add the bay leaf, dry red chillies and jeera. Once they smell, add the chopped tomatoes.
  9. Stir and add the ginger paste.
  10. Add the powdered masalas except garam masala powder and salt. Cook on a low flame with a lid on.
  11. Cook till the masala leaves oil. Add water and bring upto boil.
  12. Once the gravy is thick, add the deep fried chana Dal pieces.
  13. Sprinkle garam masala powder, check for salt and serve.
