Ingredients to make Chana Dal with Colocasia Leaves and Drumsticks

  • Chana Dal or Bengal Gram 1 cup
  • Colocasia Leaves 3 No.
  • Drumstick 2 No.
  • Cherry Tomatoes 5 No.
  • Tamarind Pods 5 No.
  • Small Onion 1 No.
  • Green Ghost Chilli 1/4 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds 1 teaspoon
  • Mustard oil 3 teaspoon
  • salt as per taste

How to make Chana Dal with Colocasia Leaves and Drumsticks

  1. Soak chana dal for 45 minutes. After 45 minutes pressure cook dal for 4 whistle. Let the pressure settle down.
  2. Roughly chop colocasia leaves and boil with little salt for 5 minutes and drain the water completely
  3. Cut drumstick into 2 inch pieces and boil for 10 min. Drain the water and keep aside
  4. Soak tamarind pods in warm water and make juice using your hands after 10 min
  5. Heat mustard oil in a wok, add cumin seeds and allow to crackle
  6. Add finely chopped onions and when it becomes translucent add cherry tomatoes and green ghost chilli
  7. Add turmeric powder, and stir fry until the tomatoes are completely cooked and releases oil
  8. Now add the boiled chana dal and on high heat add colocasia leaves and drumstick
  9. Let it simmer for 15 minutes and now add the tamarind juice, break some dal using your spatula so that the gravy becomes thick
  10. Remove from heat and serve hot with steamed rice
My Tip: Be careful while handling with ghost chilli. Try to use an iron wok.
