Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. For usal:
  2. 1/2 cup white peas (dried)/ vatane
  3. 4 tablespoons oil
  4. 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  5. 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  6. 1/2 teaspoon asafoetida
  7. 1 small onion, finely chopped
  8. 1 small tomato, finely chopped
  9. Salt as per need
  10. 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  11. 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
  12. 1/4 teaspoon cumin powder
  13. 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  14. 1 teaspoon usal / misal/ sev bhaji/ powder of (fennel seeds, cloves, cinnamon stick) powder
  15. Gooseberry size jaggery
  16. 4 tablespoons tamarind pulp
  17. For garnish:
  18. A small bowl full thick sev/ ganthiya sev
  19. 1 medium onion chopped
  20. 1 medium tomato chopped
  21. 2 sprigs cilantro chopped

Instructions

  1. First,wash and soak the peas overnight. Next day, in the pressure cooker, add oil. When its hot, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida. When it splutters, add onion and tomato.
  2. Mix well. Add salt and all powders mentioned. Add tamarind pulp and jaggery. Mix well.
  3. Add the vatana/ peas. Add little water and pressure cook for 10- 15 minutes on medium flame or till done. For serving, in a bowl, add the vatana usal, add chopped onion, tomato, lots of sev/ ganthiya and cilantro. Enjoy with pav.
