About Goan Bean Gravy Recipe

This is a traditional Goan recipe handed down from generation to generation. Cooked in a thick coconut gravy like most Goan dishes, this recipe was taught to me by my mom who was taught by her mom, my dearest granny.

Goan Bean Gravy

Ingredients to make Goan Bean Gravy

  • 1 cup black eyed beans (soaked in water for 4 hours)
  • 1 & 1/2 cup fresh grated coconut
  • 3 red chillies
  • 3 pods garlic
  • 1/4 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 tablespoon coriander seeds
  • 1 teaspoon dry mango powder (amchur)
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 2 Medium onions
  • salt to taste
  • 2 Tablespoons oil

How to make Goan Bean Gravy

  1. Grind coconut, chillies, garlic, 1 onion, cumin seeds and coriander seeds to a fine paste.
  2. Thinly slice the other onion.
  3. In a pressure cooker, heat oil and fry the sliced onion till light pink.
  4. Add the soaked beans, turmeric powder, dry mango powder, ground paste and salt.
  5. Add 4 cups of water and pressure cook. After 3 whistles, lower the flame and cook for 10-12 minutes.
  6. Serve hot with rice or rotis.

My Tip:

Chopped green chillies can also be added to make the gravy spicy.
