ABOUT Dal Bharta RECIPE

Dal Bharta is a Mughlai dish inspired from chicken Bharta.The dal is almost mashed and is quite rich with eggs and spices to bring out an awesome flavor.

Ingredients Serving: 8

  1. Toor dal 2 cups
  2. Garlic 2 cloves
  3. Onion 1/4th
  4. Bay Leaf 1
  5. Black peppercorn 5-6
  6. Cinnamon 1inch stick
  7. Salt and water
  8. For the gravy:
  9. 1 big chopped onion 1/2 tbsp garlic paste 1/2 tbsp ginger paste
  10. 2 medium chopped tomatoes
  11. 3 tbsp cashew nut paste
  12. 3 tbsp yogurt
  13. Fresh cream 2 tbsp
  14. 1 tbsp Kashmiri red chili powder
  15. Whole garam masala
  16. 1/2tsp turmeric powder
  17. 1/2 tsp cumin powder 1/2 tsp coriander powder 
  18. 1 tbsp Butter
  19. 2eggs for garnishing
  20. Chopped coriander leaves

Instructions

  1. Boil Toor dal with garlic cloves, a quartered onion, cardamom, black peppercorns, bay leaf, cinnamon sticks and salt.
  2. In a  pan heat 3 tbsp of oil.when the oil is hot add bay leaf, cinnamon sticks, cardamom, cloves and saute for few seconds, till the spices release a nice aroma.
  3. Then add chopped onion and salt. Cook on a medium heat till the onion turns golden brown.Now add ginger and garlic paste, cook for 2 minutes until raw smell goes off.
  4. Now add the chopped tomatoes and mix well. cover the pan and cook on low medium heat till the tomatoes are soft.
  5. Meanwhile  take a bowl, add turmeric powder, kashmiri red chili powder, cumin powder, coriander powder and mix with water. Prepare a paste out of it.
  6. Open the lid and check the tomatoes.When tomatoes are soft, pour the mixture and cook till the mixture dries up and the masala leaves the sides.
  7. Now add the dal.Cook really very well with other spices for 2-3 minutes.
  8. Now add 3 cashew paste and whisked yogurt. Stir well.Add 1 cup of water to cook well.Then add fresh cream followed by butter. Give a nice mix.If the Dal is dry, add little more water. Cook for another 5 minutes on a slow flame until it looks thick and creamy.
  9. Finally, add chopped eggs and coriander. Lightly mix.Plate up and garnish with egg.
