Bengal Gram ( Kala Chana Falafel)

Ingredients to make Bengal Gram ( Kala Chana Falafel)

  • Bengal Gram – 1 ½ cup
  • Onion – 1/3 cup
  • Garlic – 3 cloves
  • Cumin – 1 tbsp
  • Coriander – 1 tbsp
  • Cayenne Pepper – to taste
  • Black Pepper – ½ tsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Lemon Juice – 1 tbsp
  • Tahini – ¼ cup
  • Fresh Parsley – 1 cup
  • Fresh Cilantro – ½ cup
  • Gram Flour (Besan) – ½ cup
  • Baking Powder – 1 1/2 tsp Olive Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Olive Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Sesame seeds - 2 Tbsp
  • For Guacamole:
  • Avocado – 1 large, peeled and mashed
  • Lemon juice – 2 tsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Pita Bread: 6
  • For Pineapple Tomato Salad:
  • Pineapple chunks (bite sized) – ½ cup
  • Red Onion – ½ cup, chopped
  • Tomato – 1 large, chopped
  • Cilantro – ¼ cup, chopped
  • Lemon Juice – 1&1/2 tsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Sugar – to taste
  • For Tahini Sauce:
  • Tahini – ½ cup
  • Sriracha Sauce – 1 tbsp
  • Lettuce – 1 cup, chopped

How to make Bengal Gram ( Kala Chana Falafel)

  1. Soak the Bengal gram overnight.
  2. In a food processor, throw in the all the ingredients of the falafel except the Besan or gram flour and the sesame seeds. Pulse until the mix is minced and has some texture and not completely smooth.
  3. Mix in the Besan. This will help to bind the dough.
  4. Add the sesame seeds and mix in the dough.
  5. Make golf sized balls of dough and keep on an oiled surface. I got about 12 of them.
  6. Cook in the air-fryer for 15 minutes. I cooked the entire mix in two batches.
  7. Serve alongside the pita, salads, lemon wedges and the guacamole.

My Tip:

You can also bake in a 350 degrees F oven for 15-20 mins on each side depending on the strength of your oven. Alternatively, you can fry them too.
