Ingredients to make Rice Dumpling With Stuffed Chana Dal

  • For Pitha : Rice flour - 1.5 cup
  • Milk - 2 cup
  • Water - 1/2 Cup
  • Salt - as per taste
  • Cardamom powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Ghee - 2 tsp
  • Stuffing : Chana dal - 3/4 th cup
  • Ginger - 1/4 tsp
  • Green chilies - 2
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Zeera powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Zeera - 1 tsp
  • Oil for frying
  • Salt as per taste

How to make Rice Dumpling With Stuffed Chana Dal

  1. Soak chana dal for 4-5 hours. Drain all the water, coarsely grind the dal with ginger & chilies.
  2. In a pan add 1.5 tbsp oil. Add jeera,when it splutters add the dal mixture. Cook in low flame. Add turmeric, jeera powder, salt and mix well. Cook till consistency becomes crumbly.Switch off flame & keep aside.
  3. Take a kadhai, add milk & water. When it boils, add salt, cardamom powder & ghee. Gradually add the rice flour while stirring continuously. When the mixture thickens, switch off flame & let it cool. When the mixture is just warm enough to be touched, knead it well to form a soft dough. You can add little ghee while kneading.
  4. Now pinch small balls from the dough, flatten & make a well in the center of each ball, stuff with the chana dal filling and close from all the sides. You can give any shape of your choice. I made it like a gujia.
  5. Similarly make all the gujias and steam them in steamer on high flame for 20 mins. Serve hot with coriander & coconut chutney.
My Tip: To make very soft pithas,using milk is important. Always take less of rice flour & more of the milk, water mixture. Keep stirring while mixing. You can always add more flour if consistency is little thin. Knead the dough well.
