Chutney Podi

Ingredients to make Chutney Podi

  • Chenna dal - 1/2 cup
  • Urad dal - 1/2 cup
  • Red chilli - 10
  • Powdered Jaggery - 1 tablespoon
  • Dry coconut ( khopra) - 1 cup
  • Oil - 3 teaspoon
  • Salt as required
  • Turmeric powder - pinch
  • Jeera - 1 teaspoon
  • Asafoetida- 1/4 teaspoon (or) a small piece Kathi perungayam

How to make Chutney Podi

  1. In a pan add little oil and roast red chilli and asafoetida until they are slight brown. Let it cool.
  2. In the same pan pour little oil and roast chenna dal and urad dal separately till light red in colour. Let it cool.
  3. In the same pan dry roast khopra on low heat for not more than 5 minutes. Now grind the chana dal for 1 minute then add urad dal and continue grind until the mixture is light coarse. Place it in a bowl.
  4. Now grind all the remaining ingredients (except jeera) and mix with the dal mixture. Run the blender for a minute with all the mixture.
  5. Heat little oil in a pan. Add turmeric powder and jeera. Then add to the dal and khopra mixture. Mix well.
My Tip: It tastes spicy, sweet, sour and salty. You can use normal coconut too. Khopra gives you a unique taste.
