Rice Dumplings / kadbu

Ingredients to make Rice Dumplings / kadbu

  • 11/2 cup - Idli rice
  • 1 Cup - Coconut
  • 4 - Green chilies
  • 1 inch - Ginger
  • Dash of asafoetida
  • 5-6 - Curry leaves
  • For seasoning : 2 tsp -Oil, 1/4 tsp- Mustard seed, 5-6 - Curry leaves, 1 -2 Red chilies

How to make Rice Dumplings / kadbu

  1. Wash and soak the rice for 6 to 7 hours
  2. In a blender add ginger, green chilli, coconut, asafoetida, rice and blend into a coarse and thin paste (dosa batter consistency). Do not blend into the smooth paste.
  3. Heat a heavy bottom vessel, add oil, mustard seeds, curry leaves and red chilli. When the mustard seeds start to crackle add the blended mixture and cook for a couple of minute or till when the mixture changes the color and thickens in consistency. Remove from the gas stove and let it cool.
  4. Make small dumpling from the cooked mixture, grease the idli plate and cook the mixture in idly cooker for 15 minutes.
  5. Check to see if they're done by inserting toothpick. If it comes out clean it's done. Serve with tasty and spicy coconut chutney.
My Tip: 1.Grind the rice coarsely. 2.Add enough amount of water while grinding to make a thin paste (dosa batter consistency), so that while cooking there will be no need of adding additional water.
