Dal Khichadi

Ingredients to make Dal Khichadi

  • Split pigeon peas (Toor dal/lentil) 1 small cup
  • Rice 1 small cup
  • Carrot cut into small cubes 1/2 cup
  • Baby corn 5-6 cut into small pieces
  • Onion 1 cut into pieces
  • Tomato 1 chopped
  • Peas/frozen peas 1/2 cup
  • Corn kernels 1/2 cup
  • Oil 4-5 tablespoons
  • Mustard seeds 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin powder 1/2 teaspoon
  • Ginger garlic paste 1 tablespoon
  • Turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon
  • Chilly powder 1/2 teaspoon
  • Garam masala powder 1 teaspoon
  • Asafoetida(hing) 2 pinches
  • Salt to taste
  • Sugar 1 teaspoon (optional )
  • Coriander leaves to garnish

How to make Dal Khichadi

  1. Wash dal and rice well and soak in sufficient water for 20 minutes
  2. Drain water completely
  3. Add soaked dal and rice along with 5 cups of water, asafoetida, turmeric powder and salt to pressure cooker.
  4. cook till one whistle .
  5. Meanwhile cut all veggies
  6. In a wok heat oil. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds.
  7. add ginger garlic paste and all veggies
  8. Cook for 2-3 minutes then add pinch of turmeric powder , red chilly powder , coriander powder , garam masala salt(just for quantity of veggis as we have already added salt while cooking dal-raice.
  9. Add sugar if you like.
  10. Add cooked dal-rice and stir well.
  11. Cook for another 4-5 minutes on low heat.
  12. It is ready to serve. Garnish with coriander leaves and while serving add 1 tablespoon of clarified butter/ghee
My Tip: Inplace of toor dal you can take any other lentil.
