ABOUT Onion Thokku | Vengayam Thokku | Shallots Pickle RECIPE

Vengaya Thokku / Onion Thokku is the easy and tasty pickle variety which is made of shallots and red chilli along with tamarind, salt, jaggery. This can be had as a side dish for Idli, dosa, chapati or curd rice.

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. Sesame oil  - 3  tbsp
  2. Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  3. Curry leaves - little chopped ( optional )
  4. Small Onions / Shallots -  25 nos
  5. Red Chili - 5 nos
  6. Tamarind Extract  - 3 - 4 tbsp ( thick )
  7. Jaggery - 1 tsp
  8. Salt - as needed
  9. Hing - 1/4 tsp

Instructions

  1. In a pan add 1 tbsp of oil and saute the red chilli. Once sauteed remove from heat. Peel the shallots / small onions.
  2. Soak tamarind in warm water and extract its juice.Discard the pulp.
  3. In the blender add the red chilli, shallots, tamarind extract, salt and Hing. Grind it to a fine paste. Then add the jaggery.
  4. Blend it well. No need to add water. Heat remaining oil in a pan and add the mustard seeds and curry leaves.
  5. When it splutters, add ground onion paste. Cook till it becomes thick and oil starts separating in a low flame.
  6. Turn off the flame and allow this to cool. Store it in a clean bottle.
  7. Serve this with hot idlis and enjoy...!!
