Ingredients to make Paprika Onion Blossom

  • 1 whole large onion
  • 1 small egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4th teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4th teaspoon paprika/ peri peri powder
  • 1/4th teaspoon Oregano
  • Black pepper to taste
  • 2 teaspoon oil

How to make Paprika Onion Blossom

  1. Cut the onion flat from top (not the root) and peel the onion without removing the root portion.
  2. Place the onion with the flat side down and cut the onion into sections of 8ths or 10ths (depending on the thickness you want) straight down but leaving the root intact.
  3. Put the onion in a bowl of cold water to bloom overnight.
  4. By morning one can see the onion blooming and one can seperate the petals making sure not to break them.
  5. Whisk a egg.
  6. Brush the petals of the onion with the egg thoroughly.
  7. Sprinkle all the spices on the onion petals thoroughly and liberally coating every petal.
  8. Drizzle oil over the onion.
  9. Heat the oven at 200 degree centigrade for 10 mintues.
  10. Put the onion on the baking tray and cover with an aluminium foil in the shape of a tent and place it in the oven for 7 mintues.
  11. Remove the foil after 7 mintues, lower the oven temperature to 175 degree centigrade and bake for 15-20 mintues till the tips of the petals start turning brown.
  12. Once done transfer the bloomed onion to the serving dish and serve with tomato ketchup.

My Tip:

Mixed herbs can also be used.
