ABOUT Onion Hand Pies RECIPE

Onion hand pies are similar to the Indian version of onion samosas, just made healthier. Instead of frying, these are baked.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. For the Pie Crust:
  2. Wholewheat flour 3/4 cup
  3. All purpose flour 1/4 cup
  4. Ice cold water 1/4 cup
  5. Cold butter 1/2 cup
  6. Vinegar 1 tbsp
  7. Salt as required
  8. For the filling:
  9. Onion (chopped) 4
  10. Green chilies (chopped) 2
  11. Ginger garlic paste 1 tsp
  12. Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
  13. Garam masala powder 1/2 tsp
  14. Salt as required
  15. chopped coriander leaves 1 tbsp
  16. vegetable oil 2 tbsp
  17. Milk 1 tbsp (for wash)
  18. White sesame seeds 1/2 tsp

Instructions

  1. Take the flours and salt in a bowl.
  2. Then add the cold butter cubes and rub to form coarse crumbs.
  3. Then add the ice cold water little by little and start kneading.
  4. Add the vinegar too.
  5. Knead to form a soft dough.
  6. Cover with a cling film and refrigerate for about 2 hours.
  7. Meanwhile prepare the filling.
  8. Heat oil in a pan.
  9. Add the chopped onions until they turn soft and pink.
  10. Next add the ginger garlic paste and green chilies and saute until the raw smell goes off.
  11. Simmer the flame and add salt, turmeric powder and garam masala powder and mix well.
  12. Add the chopped coriander too.
  13. Cook covered for a minute.
  14. Switch the flame off and allow to cool completely.
  15. Take the dough out and allow to rest at room temperature for about 15-20 minutes
  16. Roll the dough out and cut out rectangular shapes or any shape of your choice, in pairs
  17. Take a rectangle crust and place 2-3 tsp of the filling on it leaving a little space around the edges.
  18. Apply little water on the edges.
  19. Place another rectangle on top and press to seal.
  20. Seal with the tips of a fork too.
  21. Apply milk wash on top and sprinkle white sesame seeds.
  22. Make small slits on tip.
  23. Repeat until all the dough and filling is used up.
  24. Preheat the oven to 180 degree centigrade.
  25. Bake for 25-30 minutes.
  26. Allow to cool a bit.
