Ingredients to make Onion Theyal/Ulli Theyal/Small onion Curry

  • Pearl Onion 1/2 cup
  • Garlic 6-8 pods
  • Tomato 1 nos
  • Curry leaves 1 spring
  • Oil 1/4 cup
  • Mustard 1 tsp
  • Urad dhal 1/2 tsp
  • Tamarind Water 1 cup
  • Coconut 1/4 cup
  • Jeera 1 tsp
  • Pepper 1 tsp
  • Pearl Onion 5-6 nos
  • Garlic 4-5 pods
  • chilli powder 1 tsp
  • coriander powder 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
  • Sambar powder 1 tsp
  • Curry Leaves 1  spring
  • methi seeds 1/2 tsp

How to make Onion Theyal/Ulli Theyal/Small onion Curry

  1. Peel and Roughly chop the Onion, garlic . Roast and grind to a smooth paste.  Squeeze the tamarind and take a cup of tamarind juice
  2. Dry roast coconut, Jeera, Pepper, 5-6 pearl onion, 4-5 pods garlic,Chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder,sambar powder, curry leaves, methi seeds, carefully roast them, bring them to room temperature and ground to a smooth paste.
  3. Ground the masala by adding some water. Heat the kadai with oil and temper it with Mustard, urad dhal and methi seeds, sauté the Onion, Garlic for few minutes till they turns soft.. add in the curry leaves and fry them.
  4. Add in the Tomatoes and cook till they mush out.. then add in the grinded masala to it
  5. Add in the Tamarind water and salt, let them boil in medium flame for 10 - 15 mins.
  6. Cook in medium flame till they ooze out the oil. Serve with Roti, rice, idli, dosa.

My Tip:

Roast the ingredients carefully, roast it without burning the ingredients. Grind them to a smooth buttery paste. Can add some more veg like brinjal and drumstick to it..
