ABOUT Onion Khakhra RECIPE

A thin, crisp and healthy tea-time snack. These khakhras have a little twist to them – instead of the regular masala khakhras, we have added onion paste to give extra flavor. Enjoy these thin and crispy khakhras with hot cuppa chai.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. For the Onion Mixture
  2. 1 Teaspoon oil
  3. 1 medium sized Onion, sliced
  4. 2 tablespoon water for crushing
  5. For the Dough
  6. ½ cup Whole wheat flour
  7. ¼ teaspoon cumin seeds/jeera
  8. ¼ teaspoon coriander powder/dhania powder
  9. ¼ teaspoon jeera/cumin powder
  10. ¼ teaspoon turmeric/haldi
  11. Salt to taste
  12. 1 teaspoon oil
  13. 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

  1. For the Onion Mixture
  2. Heat oil in a pan.
  3. Add sliced onions to it. Saute till onions become light brown in colour.
  4. Let it cool completely.
  5. Once it gets cooled, take it in a mixture jar along with 2 tablespoon water and blend to a smooth paste.
  6. For the dough
  7. In a wide bowl, combine whole wheat flour, jeera, pinch of hing, dhania powder, jeera powder, haldi and salt.
  8. Mix well and add onion paste and 1 teaspoon oil.
  9. Knead into a stiff yet pliable dough adding about 1 tablespoon water. Keep it covered for 15 minutes.
  10. Make the dough into equal sized balls. Dust with flour and roll the ball into a very thin roti.
  11. Heat the tawa on a low flame and place the khakhra on the tawa.
  12. When bubbles start coming up, flip it over. Apply few drops of oil on the portion facing up. Again flip and using a clean cloth or wooden press; press the khakhra nicely. Now apply oil on the top portion and again flip it over and press. Keep on flipping and pressing till khakhra becomes crisp. Repeat the same steps to make more khakhras.
  13. Serve thin and crispy khakhras with hot cuppa chai.
