Ingredients to make Idli

  • Parboiled rice- 1 cup
  • Short grain rice- 1/4 cup
  • Urad dal- 1/4 cup (husked black gram)
  • Salt - as per taste
  • oil
  • Water- 1 & 1/4 cup or as required
  • Fenugreek seeds- 1 tablespoon

How to make Idli

  1. 1- Rinse parboiled rice & soak it for 5-6 hours. In another vessel soak short grain rice, urad daal and fenugreek seeds.
  2. 2- After 5 hours grind parboiled rice with 1 cup of water & short grain rice, urad daal and fenugreek seeds by adding 1/4 cup water or as required and ground to a smooth paste.
  3. 3-Cover it and let the batter ferment for good 9-10 hours. After fermentation the batter will be double in size.
  4. 4-Grease the idli mould with oil and pour the batter in it. Steam the idlis in steamer for 15 minutes or till the idlis are done.
  5. 5-Serve the steaming hot idlis along with chutney and sambhar.
